What better way to celebrate Christmas in style than with a magical evening at the beautifully-refurbished St Cadoc’s Church, Caerleon?
Allegra, the renowned female voice choir and winners of an impressive ten trophies in the past two years, will be joined by The Wessex from Wiltshire - the male voice choir known for their rich harmonies and entertaining performances. Besides having a huge haul of trophies between them, the two choirs share a very special Welsh link. Not only does Thomas Graff, their current musical director, hail from Cardiff, but Allegra's Newport-born musical director, Robert T Elliott, actually founded The Wessex in 2001. He became their musical director for twelve years before being invited to become the Festival Director of the International Male Choral Festival. During his tenure with The Wessex they were the top male choir in England for ten years and in the UK for seven. Robert now leads the equally-successful Allegra, who were recently named Choir of the Year in a major choral competition in England.
Tickets are now available via Ticketsource and those keen to experience a night of festive musical delights from two of the finest choirs around in the splendid surroundings of St Cadoc's, are encouraged to buy their tickets promptly - for only £15 - as they are expected to sell out well before the big night!
An appreciative audience in Monmouth were treated this week to a concert comprising performances by Allegra, Newport's female voice choir, and raising funds for St Mary's RC Church. In the intimate surroundings of the church, with fabulous acoustics which enhance the sound for performers and audience members alike, the concert repertoire was a mix of performances from the full choir, the smaller chamber choirs, duettists, soloists and instrumentalists, showcasing the wide range of musical skills within Allegra's membership under the inspiring leadership of musical director Robert T Elliott.
Opening with the magnificent hymn 'Rejoice the Lord is King' featuring the choir's accomplished pianist Lucy Fflur Jones whose command of her keyboard rivalled the resonant sound of an orchestra, the gentle 'Count the Stars' with ethereal descant lines followed. The pace changed once again with 'Schule Aroon', a traditional Irish song with drumming by Rebecca Evans and the penny whistle played by fellow choir member Julie O'Donnell evoking images of Eire. The chamber choirs delivered an a cappella 'Rise Up, My Love', followed by 'Over the Rainbow' and Welsh hymn 'Y Mae Afon', this time with Lucy demonstrating her expertise in playing another instrument and delighting the audience by accompanying the singers on the harp.
Individuals were showcased, with Kim Wheaton's clear coloratura soprano voice in 'Laudate Dominum' and 'Conte Partiro', Nina Davies and Delyth Baker singing an emotive 'Pie Jesu' by Lloyd Webber, and Julia Rose and Gemma Wali with a dramatic rendition of 'In His Eyes' from the musical 'Jekyll and Hyde', accompanied on the piano by Julie O'Donnell giving Lucy a well-earned rest. Various percussionists in the choir - Rebecca Evans, Kristine Dumas and Julie O'Donnell - played during foot-tapping 'Cantate Brasilia' and 'Africa' (featuring Julia Rose), and Welsh composer Sir Karl Jenkins' 'Cantilena'. Songs from the musicals also included 'Think of Me', 'On my Own' and 'Seasons of Love', showcasing soloists Gemma Wali, Emily Davies, Samantha Paffey and Julie O'Donnell, and an upbeat 'Take Me Home' featured soloist Rebecca Evans.
Two audience favourites were the gentle 'Seal Lullaby' evoking the ebb and flow of the sea, and 'O Love', a particularly poignant piece.
The concert ended with a second powerful song from the musical 'Jekyll and Hyde': 'This is the Moment', sung by the whole choir. The finale saw sustained applause from an audience which included the Lynn family from Adelaide, Australia, who had been keen to listen to a Welsh choir and rated the concert as "Outstanding" and "The highlight of our holiday". Also in the audience was professional musician Owen Parsons, crowned Cardiff University's 2025 Singer of the Year, who said: "Yet another wonderful concert with Allegra as the headliner, as they effortlessly made their way through just over two hours of exciting and varied music. Dispel any thoughts of an 'amateur' choir: the now multi-award-winning ladies really do live up to their accolades with total control and polish. The choir are expertly led by Robert and accompanied by Lucy, who both echo the ladies' energy and professionalism superbly. I'm really looking forward to seeing them again during the Christmas season and can't recommend highly enough for anyone else to do the same!"
High praise indeed also came from St Mary's parish priest, Canon Nicholas James, who summarised: "Tonight's concert was the finest we have ever had at the church."
Don't miss another opportunity to hear Allegra perform locally, on October 18th at Beechwood Park Presbyterian Church (tickets are now available - see www.allegraladieschoir.co.uk) and also in their Christmas concert in St Cadoc's, Caerleon on December 6th. They are bound to sell out quickly!
Newport choir Allegra is proud to announce the appointment of their first patron - Newport West MS Jayne Bryant.
Jayne recently dropped in to one of Allegra's rehearsals, even joining in with the singing - though she said that despite the fun she had, she is 'not a singer' and found the learning harder than she anticipated! Jayne added: "I have been a big fan of Allegra for many years and it was a huge privilege to be asked to be a patron. I am looking forward to supporting the choir in the coming years and hope that as many as possible get to hear what wonderful music they perform. I hope that people in Newport and South Wales in general feel as proud as I do in having a locally-based award-winning choir. I saw their haul of trophies, all awarded to them on the same day in a recent contest, and it reinforced for me the incredibly high standard of their singing."
Allegra's chair, Dee Thomas, commented: "Jayne was the obvious choice to ask to become our first patron. She was born and brought up in Newport - in fact very close to our rehearsal venue - and is an alumna of the same school attended by several of our choir members and our MD. As well as the local connection, Jayne has proven to be an advocate of women, for example championing the purple plaques scheme for remarkable women who lived in Wales, so as we are a female voice choir it seems fitting that she has become the first of what we hope will be a select few patrons fostering a deeper connection to our musical life. We are honoured that she found time to join in our rehearsal given her busy schedule, and we look forward to welcoming her to Allegra performances in the future."
A very successful open evening was held by Newport's female voice choir, Allegra, whereby newcomers were assigned a buddy for the evening and joined in learning new songs for the choir's Christmas repertoire. Potential new member Caz said: "I was blown away by the high standard of the singing from the outset of learning a song - it's no wonder Allegra have won so many awards. It was a fun and friendly atmosphere at the open evening. I've never performed before so it was great to discover that you don't need experience and you don't need to read music, as someone is always there to guide you. I learned such a lot in just one evening and I'm already hooked - I can't wait for the next rehearsal!"
Dee Thomas, Chair of Allegra, said: "This event was designed to bring together our vibrant choir community with potential new members in a relaxed and supportive environment. However if you'd like to join us, you don't have to wait for the next open evening. You are welcome to email us on newmembers@allegraladieschoir.
If you're looking for new opportunities this autumn, then Newport's multiple award-winning choir, Allegra, could be just what you need. You may want to make new connections, seek to improve your health (singing is proven to have a positive impact on physical and mental wellbeing), you may be keen to return to singing, or this could be your first venture into the world of choral music - whatever your motivation, Allegra welcomes all women who can sing in tune!
There is a supportive coaching environment with an exceptionally-skilled musical director, Robert T Elliott, who is well-known for his adjudication of contests nationally and internationally, and who curates an eclectic repertoire across many musical genres for Allegra's concerts and contests. He is supported by a fabulous pianist with an impressive musical pedigree, Lucy Fflur Jones.
Dee Thomas, Allegra's chair, says: "We know how daunting it can be for some people to join something new for the first time, but we promise you we'll support you in this. If you're feeling nervous, our structures are designed to help boost your confidence. Within the choir is a designated buddy system to provide support each week when you access the three-week introduction to Allegra free-of-charge, and on our specific open evening on September 10th our membership secretary, Steph, will be on hand to welcome you. Fellow Allegra members are keen to spread the word about the choir they love, with comments such as: 'Joining Allegra has been amazing, I have made new friends, improved my singing, been challenged, learned more about reading music and even won awards. It's a really rewarding part of my life'; 'Best thing I did after moving to Newport'; and 'The wonderful people have been amazing in getting me back on track after a very rough year.'"
Dee adds: "Potential new members can fill in this form to let us know they intend to come along or just drop in on the 10th. We're very proud of representing South Wales in general, with members drawn from areas surrounding Newport as well as the city itself. We combine music with fun every Wednesday evening and look forward to welcoming more like-minded female singers to join us on September 10th at 7.15 pm, at St Julians Baptist Church on Beaufort Road, Newport."
Allegra's female voice choir are resting their voices over the summer break in readiness for their busy autumn and winter schedule, commencing with a performance at St Mary's RC Church, Monmouth on Sunday September 21st, and Saturday October 18th at Beechwood Park Presbyterian Church.
However they have not neglected the all-important social aspect of the choir alongside their contest wins and concerts. Several attended a summer social evening hosted by one of the choir, where they enjoyed a bring and share buffet and drinks in the sunshine, not to mention the fun of singing along to tracks by the likes of Black Sabbath and Thin Lizzy on a vintage juke box! Whilst you won't find heavy metal in their current repertoire, you can discover the eclectic mix of songs which is in their programme as tickets for the September performance are available via this link.
When Allegra entered the choir contest in the Bournemouth Performing Arts Competition this week, they knew they would be up against some very stiff competition from across the UK. However, as their singing soared in the glorious surroundings of Christchurch Priory, Allegra (and their chamber choir Allegretta) won every category they could enter, and in addition were awarded the ultimate trophies for Song of the Day and Choir of the Year!
Dee Thomas, Allegra's chair, said: "We were the first choir to sing in the morning having had an extremely early start from Newport, and the contest continued well into the evening, but we maintained our high standards to return home with so many trophies across a wide range of categories as well as a cash prize for Choir of the Year. It's a reflection of the dedication each and every singer gives to the choir and to the expertise and vision of Robert T Elliott, our musical director, and our brilliantly talented accompanist Lucy Fflur Jones. When the adjudicator gives feedback which includes comments such as, 'The handling of one piece... was as close to perfection as I have heard', you know you have created something special. These honours left us all speechless and buzzing with pride.
"We would encourage any aspiring Allegra singer who would like to be part of Newport's own award-winning female voice choir to take a look at our Facebook page where they can view a reel showing the camaraderie and success of the day, and to contact us via newmembers@allegraladieschoir.
"MOUSEHOLE MALE VOICE CHOIR
Mousehole MVC welcomed the multi-award-winning Allegra ladies’ choir from Newport to St Pol de Leon Church in Paul. They formed in 2011; musical director Robert T Elliott is an international award-winning conductor and accompanist Lucy Fflur Jones is highly qualified on both piano and harp. Before the show Mousehole’s ladies’ committee laid on afternoon tea, and after it Mousehole’s chairman Brett Farmer presented gifts to remember us by: cufflinks to Rob and a St Justin Tin brooch to Lucy. We thank the church, Allegra for travelling so far to wow us with their talent, Rob, Lucy and our own music team, our ladies’ committee and our lovely and appreciative audience.
The concert over, we headed over the road to the King’s Arms where social singing continued until the visiting ladies had to board the coach for their hotel. We look forward to our next opportunity to sing with our new friends."
Allegra's concert raises the roof at Newport Cathedral
Saturday saw another resoundingly successful concert given by Newport's award-winning choir, Allegra. Following past performances in such prestigious surroundings as Llandaff Cathedral, Bath Abbey and Truro Cathedral, it was fitting that Newport's own cathedral was the venue for the 'Women in Song 3' concert. Both Allegra and their guest choir, The Chanterelles, delivered a hugely varied programme to an appreciative audience, with everything from songs from the shows to a rousing hymn, Rejoice the Lord is King, and even songs evoking an African rainforest, Czech mountains, and a flavour of Ireland, Spain and Mexico.
'The fact that both choirs have won the prestigious Gold Cup at Cheltenham Festival of Performing Arts demonstrates the exceptionally high standard of vocal performance, as does the fact that the choirs combined to raise the roof in delivering a powerful and moving finale, 'O Love' by Elaine Hagenberg - never having sung together previously', said Angela Hiscocks, chair of Allegra.
'We are grateful to The Chanterelles, their MD Dr Shirley Court and accompanist Carolyn Earle for travelling from Leicestershire to join us. Thanks must also go to our own professional musical team of Robert T Elliott, our musical director, and Lucy Fflur Jones, our accompanist, who work tirelessly with Allegra. As always, thank you to the team at Newport Cathedral who looked after us so well, and also to Serendipitea who provided the refreshments for our visitors and our post-performance get-together, and Ty Cerdd who assisted us in obtaining staging for our performance.
'We were delighted that several of our sponsors, Newport West and Islwyn MP Ruth Jones, and the Mayor, Councillor Kate Thomas, were able to join us for the evening, and a collection totalling £350 was realised for the Mayor's chosen charities, Little People UK and BookTrust Cymru.'
Angela added: 'For those who'd like to hear us again, or who missed this performance, we have concerts planned for September 21st in St Mary's Catholic Church, Monmouth; October 18th in Beechwood Park Presbyterian Church; December 6th at St Cadoc's, Caerleon; then further afield in Swindon on December 13th. See our website, www.allegraladieschoir.co.uk for further details, but do book your tickets early, as our performances sell out quickly!'
Allegra on Tour
Allegra have just returned from a highly-successful tour in Cornwall, having received fantastic reviews for their performances. Delivering an eclectic mix of songs, from the sounds of a rainstorm in 'Africa', the lively samba rhythm of 'Cantate Brasilia', moving renditions of 'O Love That Will Not Let Me Go' and 'Count the Stars', to hits from west-end musicals, the repertoire was well-received by audiences in Paul Church (where Allegra received not just one, but several standing ovations in the concert), and in Truro Cathedral, where the sound soared in the stunning surroundings.
Saturday evening saw Mousehole Male Voice Choir hosting a wonderful 'afterglow' post-performance get-together, where both choirs stood outside the local pub on a balmy May evening and the singing continued, much to the delight of many local residents who stopped to listen, and again on Sunday, hosts Truro Male Choir and Allegra continued their singing in an informal get-together after the lunchtime concert.
Angela Hiscocks, chair of Allegra, commented: 'The tour was a huge success, with all choirs delivering a high standard of performance. We were fortunate to be staying in a glorious location - Tregenna Castle Hotel in St Ives, and in our down-time we were able to explore the beautiful area. We must thank all involved in the setting-up in the church and cathedral, Truro Male Choir and Mousehole Male Voice Choir for making us so welcome, and also the ladies' committee of Mousehole whose Cornish fare was outstanding!
'It's a small world - Sally Ganner, Allegra's treasurer and the very efficient organiser of our tour, found herself chatting to a member of Mousehole Choir - for it to turn out to be the neighbour with whom she had grown up in Newport - next-door to each other! There were many such light-hearted moments alongside the focus on our performances, confirming that being in a choir can be great fun, and we'd be delighted if more ladies would join our award-winning choir.'
Allegra will be performing locally in Newport Cathedral on June 14th, and, with guests The Chanterelles having just won the prestigious Gold Cup at the Mid Somerset Festival (the trophy Allegra won when they entered in 2023), then you can be sure of an outstanding evening of entertainment. Tickets are available from Ticket Source

Allegra "in the Pink"
It wasn't difficult for Newport's choir, Allegra, to dress in pink to mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Breast Cancer Now - they just needed to don their uniform shirts for this week's rehearsal, though they added pink bow ties, specs and bunting for an extra splash of colour!
Chairman Angela Hiscocks remarked: 'Breast cancer is an issue close to the hearts of several of our members, so we decided to hold a raffle during our practice session, raising £160. We like to add fun to our rehearsals and this was a worthy way in which to do so, whilst we worked hard on our songs for our forthcoming Christmas concert to be held at St Mark's Church, Gold Tops.'

Women in Song Sell-Out
Newport's multiple award-winning choir, Allegra, held a successful concert at St Woolos' Cathedral at the weekend, having hosted special guest choir Jubilate, from London. Chairman Angela Hiscocks remarked: 'This was our second Women in Song concert celebrating the female voice, and we were delighted that it was once again sold-out before the event. Not only were we able to showcase an eclectic mix of songs, but we collected £370 for the Mayor's chosen charities, Sparkle and SARA.
'The standard of singing within both Allegra and Jubilate is exceptionally high, as evidenced by the awards each choir has won, and we were particularly pleased to perform in the magnificent setting of our local cathedral. We are very grateful to our programme sponsors, and to the team at St Woolos' Cathedral who once again welcomed and supported us in delivering a concert of such quality - the audience came from far and wide and the feedback has been tremendous.'
Anyone wishing to hear Allegra perform again has an opportunity at the end of the year in their December 7th concert in St Mark's Church, but in the meantime, if anyone would like to try out for the choir, they are welcome to attend rehearsals at St Julian's Baptist Church on Wednesday evenings. Email newmembers@allegraladieschoir.
Fifty and Still Counting!
Local multiple award-winning choir, Allegra, are delighted to officially welcome their fiftieth new member, Jeanette Hawrot.
Allegra's chairman, Angela Hiscocks said: 'Since the days of covid when membership of choirs dwindled due to lockdowns, our membership has grown steadily and we were delighted to have Jeanette adding her fine voice to our choir. It is particularly fitting that she is our milestone fiftieth member, as another organisation in which she participates, Newport Women's Forum, has kindly donated funding to us for a much-needed new keyboard for rehearsals. (In fact Allegra is performing at their fundraising afternoon tea on 18th May as a thankyou for their generosity.) Our recent successes in the Mid-Somerset Festival and the privilege of being invited to sing before a recent Six Nations match at the Principality Stadium has meant an increase in interest in Allegra, and we have more ladies poised to join us in the coming weeks. We look forward to our numbers growing even further in the near future.’
Jeanette is full of enthusiasm for her new venture: 'I feel that it's a privilege to be singing with Allegra. The standard is very high, but I've found they are very welcoming of potential new members. We perform an eclectic mix of music from traditional, west-end musicals, chart hits and contemporary to sacred music, and I'd urge any ladies who think they might give it a go to come to a Wednesday evening rehearsal at St Julian's Baptist Church in Newport.'
There will soon be a chance to listen to Allegra in their 'Women in Song 2' concert on Saturday June 22nd at St Woolos' Cathedral, Newport, with one of the finest UK choirs, Jubilate, from London, as guests. Allegra Choir - Six Nations Here We Come!
"Newport’s multiple award-winning ladies’ choir, Allegra, are looking forward to the ladies’ Six Nations match between Wales and Italy on Saturday April 27th - but not just to support the rugby players. The choir has been chosen to sing the usual rugby match songs and the pre-match national anthems of Wales and Italy.
Allegra’s chairman, Angela Hiscocks said: ‘Many of us are avid rugby fans and we are all extremely excited to be invited to sing alongside Richard William Singers, Cor Persian and Cor Canna - all female voices - accompanied by the Regimental Band of the Royal Welsh. As the women’s game gains momentum and moves for the first time to a programme after the men's games and to Cardiff’s prestigious Principality Stadium, it's an absolute honour to be part of this 'first'. There is much learning of Welsh and Italian lyrics going on and we can’t wait to be part of the occasion in such an iconic venue! So listen out for us at the match, or catch us in concert in St Woolos' Cathedral on June 22nd.'

"Members of South Wales' award-winning female-voice choir, Allegra, are celebrating more success at the Mid-Somerset Festival in Bath. Against stiff competition, they were praised by the adjudicator as being 'outstanding' and 'exceptional'.
Allegra's Musical Director, Robert T Elliott, himself a well-known adjudicator in contests across the UK, said: 'I could not be more proud of Allegra. Competing against some of the finest choral groups around, they delivered of their very best and the rewards were reaped as they brought home no fewer than three winners' trophies. In addition, our talented accompanist, Lucy Fflur Jones, was deservedly singled out for praise. It was a great day for all concerned.'
Allegra's Chairman Angela Hiscocks added: 'Participating in contests keeps us on our toes! We rehearse on Wednesday evenings at St Julian's Baptist Church, Newport, and welcome any prospective new members who would like to come along, whether they are experienced performers or beginners. If you can sing, now is a great time to join us!'
